WIP - blog design

I’ve been working on getting my portfolio together as well as making myself a personal blog. Why do I need another blog? Well, I really want to keep eef-ink as illustrations and comics, but I also want to blog about crafts and traveling and running a business. A few posts may overlap, but there will be a lot of separate content as well. I wanted my websites to be different, but to coordinate with each other, so I’ve been working on doing that. I am loving the Clear Line theme, thinking I might eventually switch eef-ink over to it as well… But probably not anytime soon since it’s more work than I feel like doing right now.

My illustration blog, eef-ink.com Where you are right now, so you’re silly if you click that link. eef-ink is run off Atahualpa right now, if you’re interested. I really like it, however, Atahualpa isn’t very compatible with WordPress networks, so I can only use it on one site which is why I used Clear Line on the others.

My personal blog (under construction). Follow me! I just finished this yesterday, I’m still tweaking, but it’s about done!

What do you think? I want them all to “go together” without being the same. I may change the banner on my portfolio since I feel like it’s too similar to eef-ink, but I do like the colors. I want to use at least a few of the same elements on each site, right now they all use the font Shark Random Funnyness which I really like. I’m also a big fan of Arial as far as main text, so I’ve used that on all of them. I try and use some of the same colors too, but mix them in with others so that the sites don’t look exactly the same.

Do you have multiple sites? If so, do you coordinate, or try and make them all very different? Do you think I’m crazy for having so many sites?

to do list 10/12/11

Here’s a random anime drawing to entertain you.

I’m behind on my drawings, as usual. I’m in the middle of several projects right now!

Work to do list:

  • Finish php stuff for customer
  • Logo design for customer
  • Custom drawing
  • Prep for craft fair
  • Draw spider comic
  • Catch up on Daily Animal Doodles
  • Etsy shop designs
  • LLC paperwork

It’s exciting to be working with/for people! I’ve also got a craft fair this weekend, which is my first one and I’m really excited!

I’ve decided that I’m not going to launch my Etsy shop designs shop until January. If you liked one of my designs and want it now, you can contact me and we can sort it out. Otherwise, I will be launching my graphic shop/site/etc. in January and will let you all know when it is open. In the meantime, I am going to be making lots of things so it will be nice and stocked and ready to go!

design work - etsy shops (part two)

Here’s a nice big image dump of more Etsy shop designs. I feel like it’s kind of weird to do pre-made because I’m more used to doing custom work, but the feedback I’ve gotten so far has been positive. My goal is to get these up this weekend (or by Monday) for sale on Etsy and then I guess I’ll see if my pre-made designs sell.

Something that really bothered me while doing pricing research is that some people are selling designs for SO CHEAP. I can knock out a design fairy quickly (since I’m not matching someone’s specifications and going back and forth with samples), but just getting it prepped for Etsy takes time, creating the listing, etc. These people must be making pennies after Etsy and Paypal fees, and they certainly aren’t paying themselves for their time. Granted, most of the cheap designs are the ones that don’t look so great… but how do I compete with someone who makes banners for $2? I mean, my rates for custom work are pretty darn cheap, but even for pre-made I can’t go THAT low.

Frustrating.

Don’t even get me started on the people who are doing custom work and logo design for pennies. It’s ridiculous.

So, please pretend for a minute that you want a shop banner and avatar, and you don’t have a lot of money so you’re going to go the pre-made route. What would you be willing to spend?

design work - etsy shops (part one)

Okay, you know how I said I was behind on Daily Animal Doodles because I was busy? Wait… did I say that? Well, anyhow, I’ve been working on some pre-made Etsy shop kits. And yes, I know a lot of people do these, but I took a look and a lot of them are really terrible, or they all look the same. I’m trying for some variety. Also, since I am working on my own webdesign/maintenance/etc. company, it won’t hurt to do some additional design work!

Now, they are shrunk a bit via Flickr, but you can either click them to go to the Flickr page and see larger, or you can just imagine them full-sized in an Etsy shop. =]

I would really love it if you would critique these for me! Here are the first 5:

So, what do you think? If you were looking for an Etsy banner/avatar would any of these interest you? Why or why not?

If you’re impatient to critique the others, you can do so on my Flickr account.
